Sometimes pain has structural causes in the body. Sometimes stress and emotions can be expressed as muscular pain by way of tension. When pain persists, especially beyond 6 months, the brain is often involved in maintaining or exacerbating pain. For many people struggling with chronic pain, learning how to reduce the brain's involvement can be liberating and life-changing.
Mindfulness is the practice of being aware, in the present moment, with acceptance. It's tasting your coffee and feeling its warmth as opposed to washing it down mindlessly. This type of presence allows us to experience more well-being, and can play a helpful role in reducing anxiety. Dr. Tucker practices mindfulness, has done research in the area of mindfuless, and finds meaning and enjoyment in teaching mindful awareness to others.
